SENSORY INTEGRATION
Creating a Sensory Integration Space at Home: What Actually Worked for Us
Transforming a corner of the house to support physical regulation and focus can feel a bit overwhelming, especially when trying to balance various needs. When we set up our movement and sensory station, the goal was to create a space that offers both heavy work for grounding and vestibular input for balance, without completely taking over the room.
The hanging pod swing quickly became the ultimate cozy retreat. It provides gentle linear movement and deep pressure input, making it a favorite spot for winding down with a book or taking a quiet reset when things get a bit too loud. For active core work and dynamic balancing, we turn to the wooden and teal balance boards. Whether standing on the wobble board while practicing spelling words or turning it into a balancing challenge during brain breaks, it is a brilliant way to sneak in some gross motor practice.
For heavy work and proprioceptive input, the gymnastics rings and hanging bar get plenty of daily use for hanging, swinging, and upper body strength. We also use the peanut ball both as an active seating alternative and for rolling over, which offers secure, targeted vestibular input and helps with core stability during table-top tasks.
Managing sensory overload is just as important as movement, and the noise-canceling earmuffs have been a lifesaver during busy project times or when ambient household noise gets to be too much. Having them accessible allows for independent regulation when focus is needed. Meanwhile, the mini basketball hoop and target toss are brilliant for hand-eye coordination, quick energy release, and friendly competition between focus sessions. Even our swim goggles play a role, as having reliable gear on hand is essential for swim days, which provide an entirely different kind of heavy proprioceptive input through water resistance.
Every piece in this setup serves a specific purpose—whether it is burning off extra energy before sitting down to work or offering a quiet, regulating anchor during a busy day. If you are putting together your own corner, start with a mix of vestibular movement and heavy work tools, and see what naturally gets the most traction!

Why it fits our workflowInstead of asking me to trim every piece of a multi-part project, my son can now measure, cut, and build independently straight from the recycling stash. If you want to cut down on screen time, clear out your packaging pile, and add a brilliant engineering tool to your supplies, this Fockety Cardboard Cutter is a total game-changer.
