Halloween + Autumn + Winter

THE HOLLY AND THE OAK KING

The year is ruled by two brothers, bound in
an eternal, sacred cycle.

At the summer solstice, the dark Holly King defeats the golden Oak King, bringing the chill of autumn and the quiet rest of winter. Then, on the longest night of the winter solstice, the Oak King steps from the mist to strike down the Holly King, restoring warmth, light, and new growth.

Neither can rule forever; one brings the feast, the other brings the rest, keeping the balance of the world turning endlessly between light and shadow.

How to do it

Prepare the Base

Roll out a flat clay slab (1/4 to 1/2 inch thick) for each board.

Press and glue/score the slab onto the wooden board. Or you can leave of to dry on the wooden plaque and tilt to display

Core Facial Features

Nose: Press a wedge of clay in the center and smooth the edges into the slab.

Eyes & Brows: Add clay spheres, hollow out the pupils, and add heavy brow rolls above.

Mouth: Shape lips or an open mouth beneath the nose.

The Holly King (Left Plaque)

Crown: Cut pointed spiky Holly leaves, and add ivy leaves and carve vines, and layer across the top.

Berries: Add small clay spheres in clusters around the crown and cheeks, poking a center dot in each.

Moustache & Beard: Add a dotted mustache roll, then attach overlapping clay "snakes" with deeply carved lines for the beard.

The Oak King (Right Plaque)

Crown: Cut 3-to-5 lobed oak leaves and add acorns

Cheek Leaves: Place oak leaves pointing inward along the cheeks. Scatter some acorn shapes

Root Beard: Attach thicker, twisted clay coils that fan out like woody roots/tendrils.

Finish & Dry

Details: Carve titles or background texture with a needle tool.

Dry: Let dry slowly at room temperature away from direct heat to prevent warping.

If you used white airdry clay you can use acrylics to paint and add little LED lights
