How to make a 3D cardboard shark

  • What we made and how

This is how you make it step by step

Making a large, wall-mounted cardboard shark is a fantastic crafting project! Depending on whether you want a lightweight 2D silhouette or a dramatic 3D sculpture illuminated with fairy lights, here is a step-by-step guide to bring it to life.

    Materials Needed

Cardboard: Large appliance boxes or corrugated sheets (fluted cardboard provides great structural stability).

    Step-by-Step Instructions

    Step 1: Design and Template

Plan the Scale: Measure your wall space first to determine how large the shark should be.

Draw the Shape: Sketch the shark's profile directly onto your cardboard. For a classic shark, sketch a streamlined body, sweeping dorsal fin, pectoral fins, and a distinct tail. If you are inspired by the giant whale shark, sketch a broad, flat head and a massive body tapering into a wide tail.

Cut the Base: Carefully cut out the main silhouette using your cardboard cutter.

Step 2: Choose Your Dimension Style

Option A (2D Wall Art with Depth): Keep it flat, but layer smaller pieces of cardboard behind the main silhouette to create space from the wall. This allows you to string fairy lights behind it so the light glows around the edges.

Option B (3D Relief Sculpture): Cut a central spine and a series of perpendicular cardboard ribs that slot into it to build out a 3D form. Glue thin cardboard strips or curved pieces over the skeleton to create the rounded body of the shark.

    Step 3: Texture and Detailing

Build Up Features: Cut out separate pectoral and dorsal fins, score the edges, and glue them at slight angles to give the sculpture realistic dimension.

We used masking tape to blend the whole body into shape

Then used white toilet paper with papier mache to cover the shark

PVA Glue Alternative to flour mix
Mix 2 parts of PVA glue (with 1 part water in a bowl. See the PVA glue listed in the ‘what to buy’ list. Stir well for a stronger, glossier, and more durable finish that resists mold better than flour.

    Base Coat:
Paint the entire cardboard surface with a rich dark grey or charcoal black acrylic base coat.

Add Patterns: Use a sponge dabbed in white or light grey paint to create the signature speckles and grid-like stripes characteristic of a whale shark, or keep it solid for a sleek great white look. We were after an effect to look like the short fin Maco shark that child chose from the Ocean Anatomy book

    Step 4: Integrating the Lights

If you want a glowing effect, weave micro LED fairy lights along the back ridges of the cardboard frame or tape them so they cast a halo against the wall. Alternatively, carefully poke small holes through the cardboard body and thread fairy light bulbs through from the back to make the spots twinkle.

Step 5: Mounting to the Wall

Because cardboard is lightweight, you can mount your finished shark using heavy-duty command strips, double-sided mounting tape, or by looping a hidden fishing line over a secure wall hook.
